Should I be running my Postwar?
Posted by FEClionel on Thursday, July 19, 2007 6:24 PM
Recently I have begun to question running my PW Lionel. I don't have any LN or Mint items but my postwar is Excellent - yet I'm beginning to think that I should retire all PW. How much EX low mileage F3's, 6464's, 3562-75's or 736 Berks..ect... are out there? Does anyone else have this feeling or do you think I'm starting to get all nostalgic and sappy? I'm I headed for Williams reproductions?

Run em.  That's what they were made for.  Toy trains are made to be enjoyed.  There are plenty of other things you can use for investments.

Run 'em. If they're in EX condition or worse, running them won't hurt their collector value at all. If anything it'll preserve their value because if they sit a long time they're less likely to run well when someone decides they do want to run them.

I run all of my PREwar stuff too.

Yes run them, they are just as likely to go down in value, over the next 20 years, as they are up in value.

FECLionel, where you been?  Not said much lately.  ME, I run mine.  Love Command [TMCC and DCS] but, I have to pull them out and run them as they are memories.

I was raised with very little money, and really had to take care of everything...Because if it broke, and my father or I couldn't fix it we would do without.

I still observe this same mindset to some extent, worring about using new things, and possibly causing damage.  I'm getting better with this any the trains with my 2-1/2 year old.  She still grabs the train cars as they go by to put things in them...But I am glad she enjoys playing with me and the trains.  She doesn't like the '47 2025, It's too loud.  But she likes stopping the 2338.

Then I think, who am I saving this for???  It's mine, and I should enjoy it, and visit with friends so they can enjoy with you.

Run 'em till the wheels fall off, safe in the knowledge that there's not too much that can't be easily repaired or replaced. That was the beauty of New York-made PW Lionel! Keep it lubed and clean and I bet it wil outlast plenty of today's electronic whiz-bang locos too!

Most PW trains have happy memories of "Christmas past", and tend to get very sad if not run at least once a year. The "mint" ones were probably run very little, if at all, so they are the ones that won't be bothered by living in a box. I try to give all my PW's equal "track time", so none of them feel left out. Of course not!   They are rare and valuable, much too much so to be left in your hands.  Box them immediately and send them to Frank53 Big Smile [:D]  He'll see that they are properly archived.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] Defenetly run them. Mine has gotten alot of time. Even if does break ( which I dont think it will) you can always get it fixed.
