The other day, a package arrived for my husband from eBay. It was a DVD of something called "Ridin' the Rails," a documentary hosted by Johnny Cash from 1974. It's the history of railroading in about an hour.

This got me thinking about the other train-related things that Johnny Cash did, especially in the 1970s. Lionel released a Johnny Cash boxcar (no. 9870) with the "Ridin' the Rails" logo on it. (This was featured in the September 2016 issue's "Collectible Classics" column.')

He did some commercials for Lionel in the 1970s.

A number of his albums, especially in the early years, had songs about trains or were railroading themed.

Story Songs of the Trains and Rivers from 1969.

Orange Blossom Special from 1965.

The motherlode: This box set was released in 1991.

When we asked for suggestions for train songs a while back, this Johnny Cash song was mentioned several times (scroll down):

Sigh. They don't make music and voices like that anymore.
