A week ago, I saw an advertisement in the local newspaper, announcing that four WWII bomber planes would be coming to town. I've read a number of WWII-themed books, and it sounded like a unique experience.
The non-profit group the Collings Foundation hosted the event, and is crossing the country on tour. They have four WWII bombers that, according to a member of the Foundation, are in flight 300 days per year. If you have the cash, you can get a ride in the B-17, B-24, or B-25. For more cash, you can get flight training in the P-51 Mustang. Click on any photo to enlarge.
After I entered the exhibit, the P-51 Mustang started its engine to move closer the crowd. According to their ad this is the only full dual-control P-51C Mustang left in the world. Neat!
Next I went to the B-17G. What a massive piece of machinery! It is hard to fully appreciate the size of this bomber in photographs. You could walk through the B-17 (which of course, I did). As I was waiting in line, an older gentleman with his son and (likely) daughter-in-law was slowly climbing the ladder for a look inside. I later learned he was a WWII veteran.
It was eye-opening touring the inside of the B-17. Imagine spending hours in this cramped space! I applaud the servicemen who served these missions.
The B-25 Mitchell was on the runway, and took flight while I was there. I took three short video clips and combined them into one video. Find a link to the video here. Look under the "Schedule" tab of the Wings of Freedom tour.
Sadly, the B-24 had not arrived yet, due to issues with weather. It did arrive later that night, however.
Overall, it was an interesting and educational visit. If this tour comes to your town, I recommend checking it out. Here is a link to the Foundation's website.
