Yes, they do let 'em roll over there. If I am not very much mistaken, I think that before British Rail will let them out on the main lines, the engines will have to be able to maintain a high rate of speed in order to not delay trains in regular service.

"Men of the Footplate" is a short pre-war film about a new engine wiper who becomes a fireman. Very informative movie.

If you like then rolling along here's a documentary about a built from scratch over a 20 or so year period, think it was finished about 10 yeras ago, LNER 4-6-2 Tornado being allowed to go to 100mph. This was a test to see if the limit of 75mph (larger drivers) could be raised to 90mph to allow them to fit into the modern railway system scheduling more easily.

I saw the Tornado in the passenger station shed at York when my wife and I were taking the train from London to Edinburgh about 10 years ago.  Later on in the trip, up near the Scottish border, we saw another Tornado, but this one was owned by the RAF and was doing low level training. All in all, a very good day.

I was asked to.  Can't say any more except I'm not in trouble over it.
