NYC Classification for S-2 780?
Posted by NW_611 on Saturday, June 2, 2007 12:33 PM
I'm trying to find out what the NYC called S-2 #780 according to their scheme. I've figured out 'DES' for Diesel-Electric Switcher, but beyond that, I'm lost. My two best resources for NYC roster information have come up blank, so any help's appreciated.

Just finished checking a half dozen books dealing with the New York Central. Several had rosters listing the S-2's, but none were ever numbered in the 700's.

The picture explains a lot. The original S-1 an S-2's were electrics that ran from Grand Central to Croton-Harmon. The 780 is a diesel locomotive and it is too late at night for me to go back through my books to find this unit. I'll check tomorrrow afternoon afternoon and dinner.

780 was the first of 168 DES-11 models built by ALCO (ALCO-GE) for the NYC from 1943-1953. 780 was renumbered 8500 in 1944 and 9600 in 1966. Information from New York Central's Later Power, 1910-1968 by Alvin Staufer and Edward L. May. Chart on page 415. Picture of 8611 an S4 (DES-11K) new at Alco in 1952 on Page 416.
