Getting started with 027?

I'm finally going to try and build a layout in the next year or so. Like most folks, I had boxes of trains as a kid and even managed to build a decent two-4X8 table layout back in the 60s. My question is this. Does it make sense to clean and reuse my old Lionel and Marx 027 track? I thought I'd get some of the larger radius curves for the new layout - but I could reuse the staights and switches (and even the 27" diameter curves out-of-sight). Any thoughts?? Thanks.

Many of the current track lines on the market are so good I would suggest starting over with Gargraves or some of the new "ROADBED-ON" track lionel and MTH make. Problem with hiding that old track in a mountain comes if you loose electrical connection over time, if you insist on using it, I'd suggest soldering feeder wires to all 3 rails on every piece, or solder all the "joints".

One more note.......Remember, the old O27 curves will not handle much of the new equipment on the market today, I use 54'' radius and it will handle everything from and 0-6-0 to a big boy. Plus it looks 100% more realistic
