Does anyone know it they ever ran any electric locomotives or was the catenary only used for electric powered commuter cars.

DL&W had a pair of dual powered (catenary & battery) locomotives used for switching and some local freight. Obviously they could not stray far from the wire.

These two battery-electric locomotives lasted through WWII.

Actually, they were tri-powers (diesel, battery, electric) and were similar to those on NYC except that they had a pantograph for electric pick-up instead of third-rail shoes.

Similarly, IC had four straight electric steeple cabs that performed yard work under catenary north of Roosevelt Rd. They were sold to South Shore Line (900-903) in 1941.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
