Lionel Crane Cars-Question

Hi Group,
I am interested in getting a Lionel #6460, the B-E Crane car (Diecast Body & Chassis). I recently saw a 6460 on ebay that was black and had a gray smokestack at the rear of the car.
Can anyone tell me if this is a lionel variation or if the model was altered by it's owner?
