Nice!

One quibble though - the race is taking place on Cajon Pass. El Cajon is a city a few miles east of San Diego and is on what was the San Diego, Cuyamaca and Eastern - now the Santee line of the SD Trolley system.

Nice find Balt! Go Daylight Go!

Right up to the mechanical failure.  Noted the 4449 was only hauling 6 or 7 cars and it looked like the 8444 was hauling near 20.  How much assist the diesel was giving the 8444 is open to question.

It's been years since I've seen this race, and yes the 8444 did get a little assistance from the E-9. Information per the fireman aboard the 8444. Great publicity stunt though. I remember it being on TV. August of that year Dad packed us up and we moved away from Southern California to Michigan..
