1948 Century and Niagara

Firstly sorry if this has been covered in the past but a search didn't pull anything up.

I thought I had seen all the C&O Allegheny pics I was likely to having rummaged and bought whatever books and C&OHS stuff there seemed to be and I'd never seen a picture of them double-heading. Lo-and-behold the other day I just happened to look up Powell Hill and there was one in front of my eyes. Interesting.

That drew me back to something I have been curious about for many years. Has anyone eyeballed a picture or an account of a Niagara pulling the '48 century?

I have one from Feb - if I remember rightly - of that year but the '38 equipment and I do believe a while ago one at the head end of a pair of E7s with the '48 but being needed for additional train heating. But an honest to goodness on it's own pic or account. Has it been seen? I would also say I have all the 20th century research material I can lay my hands on and never seen one.

The only one I've run across is on page 34 of The Twentieth Century Limited 1938-1967 by Richard J. Cook, Sr., TLC Publishing, Inc., 2nd Printing, 1995.  The caption reads: "In a rare occurance, No. 6017, one of the New York Central's mighty Niagara type 4-8-4's handles the Century at Berea, Ohio, at 9:00 am on January 25, 1948 running four hours late-undoubtedly because of the weather."  Unfortunately the swirling snow kicked up by the locomotive nearly obliterates the cars fgrom the photo.  But I also think it's too early for the train to have had the postwar cars.  But maybe this is the image you were thinking of?

Yes that's it but the '48 was later that year in summer. Close but no cigar as they say!
