can someone explain the difference of these two?

was doin' some surfin' tonight, and found a soundbyte
page of some various locos, in one description it mentioned
' air whistle', have never heard the term before, but the
sample i listened to is something i have heard before !

ice station zero here in Iowa, sure seems to put
a different tone in the note of the locomotive traffic
tonight !!!

The air whistle is probably a Hancock 4700, found on NH FL9's, EJ&E Baldwin center-cabs and perhaps a few other locomotives. The sound is similar to a steam whistle but did not seem to carry as well.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

have active traffic on the mainline thru my town,
would be cool to hear something like those whistles
on these modern diesels...
