If a enlistee from, say,Minnesota wanted to go to Camp Roberts to train for World War 2, what is the easy way to get to Camp Roberts: Milwaukee Road from Saint Paul to Omaha via Union Pacific to Los Angeles via Southern Pacific Coast Line to SLO, or Milwaukee Road from Saint Paul to Kansas City via Santa Fe to Los Angeles via Southern Pacific Coast Line to SLO or Kansas City via Rock Island-Southern Pacific to Los Angeles via SP Coast Line to SLO

Or CMStP&O/C&NW via Omaha.  The routing of "mains" could go pretty much anywhere there was track capacity and crew availability.  RI/SP and C&NW/UP/SP followed normal interchange paths.

Might depend where in Minnesota he was.

If he's in or near the Twin Cities, I can see him going to Spokane on the GN, down to Portland on the SP&S, and then down the SP coast route.
