Durham and Southern Railway
Posted by jmpmap on Monday, December 20, 2004 7:07 AM
I am searching for pictures of passenger cars that the Durham and Southern Railway once had. Does anyone know what type cars these were? I am compiling information to someday be published into a book on the D&S.
Thanks.

Hi Stewart. The Durham and Southern was a small railway was a shortline that ran from Durham, North Carolina south to Dunn, NC. In the earliest days, it ran 4-6-0 Steam engines, then bought Baldwin 2-10-0 steam engines called Decapods, named for their wheel arrangement. In the early 50's, they purchased Diesel Engines made by Baldwin, and finally GP38-2's in the early 70's. The railroad was absorbed into the Seaboard Coastline Railroad in the 70's, and the tracks were pulled up in the early 80's. They ran passenger service, several years before I was born, but I can find no data to support the type of cars they used or much information about it. I grew up by the railroad and have great interest in it. If I can gather enough information, I hope to one day publish a book on the railroad, something that to my knowledge has never been done. Thanks for asking about the railroad and welcome. Marc

Hi Marc. I ran accross your post when I was looking for some information about the Durham Southern Railway. I am looking for ideas to build a model train. I found pictures on the Durham County Library website that showed some trains but most of them did not show much rolling stock. The pictures date well before the 50's though. Some are from 1910 and earlier. I hope this helps your search. If you have any more pics than that please let me know.

Hi bigduke6nc. I have a few pictures that I can probably send to you, but unfortunately I do not have them on computer yet. I have a few books and magazines also. I grew along the line, but best remember it in the 60's and 70's. the D&S stopped running steam in 1954. I could possibly answer some questions if you want to email me direct.
jmpmap@yahoo.com . What era are you wanting to model?

Durham,N.C. was named after Bartlett Durham. In 1853 he donated some of his land to build a train station there.
