Doghouse
Posted by BaltACD on Thursday, January 19, 2017 3:10 PM

PRR and some other carriers used 'doghouses' on their steam locomotive tenders to house the head end brakeman on their trains.  Was the doghouse heated in the winter time?  Would be an awfully cold day's work if it wasn't.

Never too old to have a happy childhood!

I had an uncle who worked as a breakman for the PRR.  He told me they were steam heated and had a small radiator in them.  The PRR with their small cabs made the doghouse somewhat more comfortable than being in the cab. Positioned as they were on the tenders he could also easily assist in pushing stubborn coal further down bunker.

Their position on the water portion of the tender may have provided some slight cooling in warmer weather. Even without that it must have been nice to get away from the firebox.

Maybe that little black box would be more like..."To the cooler Hilts"!
