Old Trains of Eastern Kentucky
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 4:33 PM
Hello. I am looking for pictures of old trains from eastern Kentucky. Particularly, in the area of Morehead, Kentucky, C&O Line.

Bill, [#welcome] to the Forums!!!!!!!

I don't always visit this forum, but saw someting about Eastern Ky. so I just had to
look. I grew up all around E.K. and actually lived in Morehead for a couple of years
early in life;and in later years, went to college there.

I'll send you more via e-mail at a later time.
I'm usually on the Trains Mag. forum,or once in awhile on MR.[:)]

Bill,I haven't found the Baldwin photos yet.It might take a while.Elmer Sulzer wrote a book about abandoned Kentucky railroads called "Ghost Railroads of Kentucky" which might be another source of information. Some public libraries in Kentucky and Tennesee, might have it,the book is about pre 1960 abandoned railroads. The "G" is for Goebel. cordially Joe G.

Bill,
This thread from www.railfan.net may be of help to you.
http://forums.railfan.net/forums.cgi?board=Kentucky

There are some postings of the Lexington Sub. on there.

Also, on www.railpictures.net you can search under Morehead KY or Clearfield KY and it will turn up some results with some photos of the equipment that was left in Clearfield. I think there may be a photo of the steam loco that is still there today.

If I can think of anything else I will let you know. It seems as though there is something else, but I have forgotten right now.

I don't think that the "Ghosts Railroads of Kentucky" will have a lot about Morehead in general since that line was not abandoned until the 80's. But there is quite a bit of the surrounding areas covered in the book.

Sulzer's books have been r/p by Indiana University Press; a little easier on the pocketbook if you want to buy rather than borrow.
