Maine Passenger Train Service---1923
Posted by pajrr on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 9:06 PM

Hi, I am doing research on something and I need some help. What railroad would have provided passenger service between Bangor, ME and Augusta, ME in 1923? Also, what railroad provided passenger service through East Livermore, ME in 1923? Where did that line go? If anyone knows the answer it would help me with my research. Thank you in advance.

Maine railroad histories are well chronicled.  Maine Central was the railroad of note in the line but there were many others in and out of Bangor and Augusta of importance.  Each railroad has its own history published and a great, but rare, composite is a 1979  publication entitled, ALL ABOARD FOR YESTERDAY compiled by J. Malcomb Barter.  You don't say where you are, but if you are in Maine, I am sure any librarian or railroad historical society could help you find it or any of the other books about Maine railrods and their histories.  You may also check at the gift shops at any of the dozens of tourist rails operations or at hobby shops.

RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.

East Livermore was on Maine Central's Androscoggin Division, which was 74 miles from Bath and Brunswick through Lewiston to Farmington. The 1948 map at link doesn't show East Livermore but does show Livermore Falls, just to the north of East Livermore, and it shows only Maine Central between Augusta and Bangor.

As mentioned by Henry6, the Maine Central provided service between Bangor and Augusta.  The Maine Central also operated passenger service through East Livermore on the Farmington Branch, which ran between Crowley's Junction and Farmington.  Passenger service through East Livermore in 1923 consisted of 2 daily, except Sunday trains and one Sunday train which ran between Portland and Farmington.  The trains ran on the Portland-Waterville line to Leeds Junction, where they were switched to and from the Farmington Branch for the run to Farmington.   (Information derived from the October, 1923 Official Guide)

Hi Everyone! Thank you for all of your replies. I have a 1923 Maine Central seat check in my railroadiana collection. On the seat check is written one man's journey to get home for Christmas. He left Bangor on Dec 16 ( 88 years ago today!) and reached home (E. Livermore) on Dec 17. He hitch-hiked and walked the final 24 miles from Augusta to E. Livermore. His journey was about 100 miles and it took him 2 days to complete it. We take such a journey for granted today. Jump in our cars and in a couple hours we get to where we are going. On the bottom of the seat check is his name and the words "Home for Christmas." On behalf of Mr.Whitcomb and myself, I wish you all a safe trip home and a joyous Holiday season.
