Caboose restoration II
Posted by tpatrick on Saturday, August 7, 2004 9:06 PM
The earlier thread on caboose restoration reminded me that some time ago Conrail had some cabooses available to anyone who wanted one. For a price, of course. Does anybody know whether there might still be some available? I was thinking of an ex-Erie caboose in particular. Our town might be interested. Who might I contact about price and terms?

I'm not sure about the Conrail cabooses that you are referring to. However, if your town would like a caboose, there are some websites on the internet of businesses that deal in selling cabooses and other railroad equipment. It would probably be easier to get in touch with one of these companies, as they specialize in selling and transporting railroad cars for people who purchase them. The sites are:
www.cabooses4sale.com
www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com
www.railmerchants.net
I would also highly recommend that you read this article: http://www.trains.com/Content/Dynamic/Articles/000/000/000/470gcujt.asp It tells the story of what one man went through to purchase a caboose. It gives a good idea of what is entailed in buying one and the costs involved.
