The Ulster and Delaware branch used only 4-6-0 ten-wheelers, most with piston valves, but some stil with Stephenson valve motion and slide valves. This was for both frieght and passenger service. The West Shore used K-3 Pacifics and J-1 Hudsons, with very occasional use of the 4-8-2 Mowhawk, which handled many of the frieghts. Also rode them.
The southern part of the West Shore was visited by the 4-8-2's of the New York Ontario and Western. That railroad would borrow steel coaches from the NYC's West Shore for weekend and holiday summer service to suppliment their own "timber fleet."
