F unit couplers

F unit couplers

Does anybody have an oppinion on what couplers would be correct to couple a set of  NYC freight  F7 ABAs?.

I was contemplating H couplers between the units, but then thought that might be more approriate for passanger versions then maybe the standard coupler would be in order. The pictures that I have access to are not clear enough to figureout when they typically went with the Hs over the standard Jenny style. I read the pages in my 1947 Locomotive Cyclopedia on the type Hs, but even they only spoke in generics. I have many NYC books with alot of photographs, but no good views of the couplers. Any oppinions on this subject would be appreciated

Some roads allowed for all units to be standard couplers so all units were interchangeable.  Others, like the DL&W, had a few A/B combinations that were semi-permenantly coupled.

Are you certain that it was F7A's and F7B's that were permenantly coupled?  Possibly you may be thinking of FT's and F2's?   My impression was that from F-3's on, all EMD's units had couplers and not drawbars on  both ends.

Most railroads ordered their freight units (which NYC F7's were) with the E (freight) couplers. The passenger F3  units most likely got the the type H tightlock coupler. 

I was unable to locate any NYC/EMD F7 builder photos doing a quick search. I did locate some GN and RI builder shots for their F-7's and both had type E, even the RI FP7 had E type couplers.  Knowing that the type E is less expensive, I feel it would be a good bet the NYC got them too.
