A-B-A: why two A units ?

Say Passengerfan, interesting your post about NP A-B-B sets is almost identical to my earlier one (needing to create A-B-A sets to make it easier to navigate the wye) except I had heard it was St.Paul not Seattle. Maybe it was both??
