Help me identify!
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 4, 2008 11:08 AM

My father-in-law found this lamp and would like some help identifying it.  Any information will be helpful.  Some information on the lamp is as follows.

On the back-" handlan st. louis usa "

On the wick adjustor- "The Plume & Atwood MFG Co"

Thanks

I believe it is a lamp used in a caboose, or in a bunk car.

I believe the "plate" over the top was so that soot from the flame would collect there, rather than on the roof of the caboose or building the lamp was used in.

I have one very similar to that but it does not have the disk on the top. It has a spring loaded attachment bracket that the lamp itself fits into, and if it is mounted to the wall and you wack it it will give rather than break. It also has three wires that protrude from the base that look that they held a shade or globe of some type.

The very good friend who says he has had it forever, and he is over 80, said it came out of a caboose. I am living in the northwest so i'm thinking CM&StP, NP, GN...

I also have a spitoon that came out of the Milwaukee Road freight house in Tacoma. The lady that gave it to me said her father brought it home when they closed the freight station. Her father worked there as the freight agent for Tacoma.  It is made of ceramic, and is dark green in the outside color, and cream on the inside. I figured it would be brass when she mentioned it, but this seems much more practical. It sure wouldn't tip over easily if you kicked it accidentilly.

Cool lamp looks really old. It looks like it could of been a lamp somebody used on a train platform during the night. If you could tell me where he found it I could help you more.
