UP Park Special
Posted by 081552 on Sunday, December 23, 2007 3:38 PM

Can anyone give me some additional information on Union Pacific's Park Special? I have it listed in my May 1961 Official Guide and it vanished by the end of the sixites.

The May 1961 summer consist is as shown:

Club Lounge Car                 Salt Lake City to Victor-for use of sleeping car passengers

Streamlined Sleeping Cars    Sale Lake City to Victor-10-Rommettes, 6 double Bedrooms
                                      (No.47 beyond Pocatello)

Pocatello to Victor - 10 Roomettes, 6 Double Bedrooms

                                        (open 9 p.m.)

Reclining Seat Coaches        Salt Lake City to Victor (No. 47 Pocatello to Victor)

Does either Victor or Ashton still have rail service?

Thank You!

You might try getting a copy of the book Yellowstone Branch of the Union Pacific by Thornton Waite for details about the branch. Unfortunately missing the middle 16 pages of my copy which would give a more difinitive asnwer to your question regarding Ashton and Victor.. Anyway, the line is still in use at least as far as St. Anthony - drove by there last summer.

Checked the book - freight service was still being provided to Ashton at the time the book was published (mid 1990's), but the line to Victor had been torn up. Interesting to hear that the passenger service to Victor outlasted the passenger service to West Yellowstone (last season was 1960).

Hasn't been any passenger service since the beginning of Amtrak and am not even sure if there is still freight service on that line.
