    Fpr me it would be the H or E class engines of the Chicago NorthWestern  or a Texas type of the  the Chicago Great Western   L:arryClown [:o)]

   Reading 2102, probably the first live standard guage steamer I saw when I was a teenager. I saw it doubleheaded with 2100 for the Iron Ramble Train in '63.  Tongue [:P]

   Last October I caught a very quick glimpse of it inside a building at Port Clinton and wish I could have gotten a better view of it to take a picture.  Does anyone know if it will be displayed at the new museum in Hamburg?  Whistling [:-^]

I assume you mean running when not presently running, or extant for viewing where none are currently extant or at least visible to the public. All of my choices exist, and I'd like to see them running. Not necessarily in order:

Southern Railway 4501 (Ms class 2-8-2, at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum)

Southern Railway 1401 (Ps-4 class 4-6-2, in the Smithsonian)

Norfolk & Western 2156 (Y6a class 2-8-8-2, I think in St. Louis?)

Norfolk & Western 1218 (A class 2-6-6-4, at the Virginia Museum of Transportation)

one of the Big Boys (4-8-8-4, eight disbursed all over the country)

one of the Southern Pacific Pacifics (4-6-2's, there are two or three on the west coast, forget the numbers, 24xx?)

Nickel Plate Road 759 or 763 (2-8-4's--yes, I realize 765 is running, but no harm having two)

Of locomotives that are all gone:

a Southern Railway Ps-3 (four little 4-6-2's for the New Orleans & Northeastern)

a Southern Railway Ms-3 (little 2-8-2's for the New Orleans & Northeastern)

You know what?  You pick an engine in steam, anywhere, from any road, and I'll back you up.  I just like steam.

If it were solely up to me, Pennsy Duplex T1 4-4-4-4 or an NYC Niagara 4-8-4...can't make up my mind.  Do them both and let them tag-team a 25 car consist of heavies. Tongue [:P]

I would love to see a New York Central J1-e Hudson fly by. One of the prettiest steamers Ive seen. But I would love to see any type of steamer run.

I'd like to see a CPR 2-10-0 "Decapod" Those were common in Minnedosa, Manitoba still in the 50's, though i was'nt born yet. They could really storm up the high grades.

What happened to the GG-1's? Would love to see one of these restored and running again!

The Last one running was in early 1980? Did this meet the scrappers torch?

There are several G's preserved. The best I think, is the brunswick green motor in the Harrisburg Pa, station. It looks great, just as it would have looked 50 years ago. I'd give a lot to see one pounding down the NEC today, just as I rode behind them many a time but unless someone with a great deal of money steps forward none will ever run again. Electric motors do not survive as readily as steam does.

You would think this would be an easy restoration, with all the advances in electronics, parts on the other hand? With low maintenance cost this would be an ideal loco to restore... just need the over head cant. wires....that would be some doe.... so if somebody had to put a $ sign on this restoration vrs. a steam locomotive wonder what the comparison would be....why do electric motors meat the torch quicker?

The electronic components very quickly corrode when not in use and in the case of the GG 1's their gearboxes and rectifiers used a lubricating material loaded with PCB's, a real No-No today. Yes it would be possible to put new motors into a GG 1 ( I always wondered if you could have put the innards of an E 60 into a G's body) motors that would use the power of the catenary on the NEC. I imagine that if built properly NJT or Amtrak might not only allow their use but on certain peak travel periods might actually lease them. I fear, though, that I will not see a running GG 1 this side of that great roundhouse in the sky.

I would settle for a CPR 2-10-4 Selkirk in full operation in the territory it was built for. What a tourist draw that would be between Banff and Revelstoke in the summer pulling CPR Maroon cars.

A second choice would be a GN 4-8-2 in Glacier Park Green operating as a tourist operation over Marias Pass.

Well, i've been waitin 5 years, and the Prairie Dog Central's 1882 4-4-0 Old No.3 (125 years old) is going to be runnin this year again, and i am excited, i grew up watching it steam down to Transcona Shop Yards, and it would always blow it's whistle, honestly, i think it's that engine that kindled me to be a railfan after all, and the GMD-1's i saw on prairie branches. And Old No.3 was built in 1882 by Dubs&co of Glasgow, Scotland for the CPR, so the Scottish heritage is tyed in there too :)

I'd love to see the last pair of Baldwin Sharks liberated from that shed in Escanaba Michigan. I understand why he shut them away, but the time has come for them to come out and be restored

UP 3985 is running this fall to St. Paul from Cheyenne...close enough...most people had to look for the 2 extra sets of wheels across a engine terminal.  watching those 2 sets of drivers at 63 MPH from a parallel road is kewl.  i talked to some of the steam crew last spring and they told me that they're not going to run 3985 nearly as much anymore because it takes 3X the #5 oil fuel to run as 844 does.
