Lionel Postwar 2671 Tender

Lionel Postwar 2671 Tender

I am wondering if anyone can come up with an answer to the numbering of 2671W vs. 2671WX on these tenders.  Is there really any difference between the numbers?  Just curious.

I got this from the Greenberg Guide and variations book. As was said above, the 2671W was Pennsylvania, the 2671WX was lionel lines. In adition, the 2671W tender had a black painted body numbered 2671W-5 on a 2671W-10 frame.

The 2671WX was a hybrid tender using the frame of 2671W with the body from 2046W. The 2671WX tender is worth more than the 2671W by about $15.00.

Your Right.

The 1950 Catalog, page 17, shows the 671 Freight Set (2167WS) with a 2671W tender lettered Pennsylvaina.  Below on the same page is the 736 Freight Set (2163WS) with a 2671WX tender lettered Lionel Lines.

I finally have an answer that has been puzzling me for a while.  I appreciate the help.  I thought at least one person would be able to answer the question.  Just starting to get back into an 027 setup after 35+ years, and going over some of the old stuff that I still had.  I have a 2671w but no factory box.

Hi, everyone, I'm new to this forum.

For those who don't know, is that, when the 2671W tender first came out in early 1948 it had a higher voltage bulb, then was quickly changed to a 14 volt bulb for it's 'Back-Up' light unit and before mid. '48 the back-up lights were discontinued.

From what I found out, the higher voltage bulb caused heat damge to the upper rear of the tender's shell, plus the light unit was costly and presented too much of a problem to include in future tenders.

Usually the 2046W/X(L.L.), 2046W-50(P.R.R.) and some 2671W/X(P.R.R.)/(L.L.) did not come with a b.u. light unit.    A b.u. light kit can be installed by connecting the light's lead wire to the whistle motor's hot side and the light socket's bracket is secured to the left rear corner of the tender frame by a screw, which creates the light unit's ground.   The bulb faces towards the light unit's lens bar.

The 2046 series tenders need a hole drilled into the left rear corner of the frame, approximately 1/8", or a little more, in from the left side and approx. 1/4" in from the rear edge of the frame, in order to secure the light's socket bracket, as well, as for the ground connection and clearence of the light unit from the left wall and rear wall of the tender's shell-body.

Most 2671 series tender frames come with such a hole from the factory, but now for more confussion the three lens holes, in the tender's upper section of the rear wall of the shell, close to the rear deck surface, must have three open holes in order to insert the b.u. light lens bar's three lenses.

There are some of these 'Streamlined' long and short tender body-shells which have the lens holes closed up and do not have the drilled hole in it's left rear corner of the tender frame for the light unit's bracket to be secured to.

 The b.u. light kit is sold by parts dealers, as well, as other sources.    The kit consist of a  socket (with it's components) connected to a bracket, a lead wire and a 14 volt miniature screw base, clear round globe bulb and a clear plastic lense bar which contains three molded lenses attached to it. The three lenses can be left clear, or colored according to R.R. operations.

Those of you, like myself, who want the back-up lights, I say they really look prototypical.   Then, of course one can spend more money to have the outter two lights stay constantly illuminated-red and the center one clear which only illuminates in the reverse position with the help of these new smaller leds and a good electronics engineer, even a Lionel postwar can appear more prototypical.
