Civil War Era Rolling stock and more?
Posted by torn confederate on Friday, November 7, 2008 10:35 PM

Hello all. I just had a couple questions I thought I would try and seek some advice for. I just signed up here today though I have been getting Model Railroader and others forever. I am a Union Civil War Reenactor with the 10th Illinois and  HUGE history buff. That tends to wanna blend in with my HO scale model railroading. I have modeled a mid 1900's era Pennsylvania railroad all the way up to including us Civil War Reenactors doing reenactments and having encampments.

The questions I have are if anyone knows of or has heard of places to get Civil War era rolling stock, building styles, etc... Locomotives are not hard to come by, but I can rarely find rolling stock. I have scratch built a lot of buildings to suit what I needed. What I would really like to find are people in HO scale in Civil War atire and period wear or at least something simular that I could work with to make them  into soldiers. Mine are out of scale but they are the smallest I could find. would like cannons, horse and buggies, etc... as well. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Ryan

There is a Yahoo CW railroad group with quite a lot of info in the Files and Photos sections of the group.

Dom't know how active the group is. I do know one person from the group was selling CW labeled rolling stock and locos on ebay. Sometimes he sold flat cars with cannons on them. Go to the HO Scale section and search for Civil War. You will get results. I just did. Be careful, some people try to label as Civil War when the stuff is not.

This is the Civil War group,http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Civil_War_RRs/ .  It is very active, although Union guys seem to be outnumbered by the Rebs!!Shock Go to the site and sign up.  In a few days you will be a member - no dues or anything.  I get about 3 to 10 e-mails every day on all kinds of subjects they are discussing.  They also have a lot of links to suppliers and tons of pics! I have a set of HO scale Civil War era rolling stock that was made by International Hobby Corporation many years ago.  It's even marked U.S. Military RR, but I'm not sure how accurate it may be.  I don't run it.  It is on a display shelf at our HO scale club.

I haven't seen these advertised by IHC for about 10 years so I doubt that they have any left in stock, but you may be able to find a set on e-Bay.

If you want to try contacting IHC their offices are in Philadelphia, PA.  Their web site is http://www.ihc-hobby.com and their phone number is (215) 426-2873.

Good luck.

It sounds like you are not on the HO scale section. I see a flat car with three canon, Bobber caboose, box car, hospital car, troop car, 4-4-0 loco, all decorated for the CSA. There are two smooth bore cannon.

In this section, Toys & hobbies, Model RR Trains, HO Scale

The below section has an Airfix HO/OO scale civil war artillery set.

Toys & Hobbies, Toy Soldiers, Pre-1970, Plastic

Model Power makes both passenger and freight cars that would be suitable.  Go to ModelPower.com, click on Mantua Classics, and then choose either Wooden vintage freight cars, or wooden passenger cars.

I can't find a web site for them, but Jordan Minatures makes several horse-drawn carts and wagons.  They are kits that take a bit of patience to assemble, but they come out quite nicely.  You can find them at Walthers or other on-line places.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

I take it that accuracy is not important to fans of the Confederacy?

Whatever. This is model railroading where most modelers make their own version of reality.

Which is why I put the question - presumably someone who is a re-enactor and history buff would seek accurate models of Civil War-era trains. The trains refererred to aren't a "version of reality" so much as a fantasy...

Mark, to be frank, that is really none of your concern. Each and every single model railroader has to make compromises when taking something from 1:1 scale down to the scale of their choice. No one, and I repeat, no one, has ever made an exact replica of the real world on a model railroad. Everyone is forced to cut corners and take certain liberties.

While it's getting easier and easier for those of us who are modeling mainstream railroads to replicate scenes as close as possible, I would assume that someone modeling the Civil War era is going to have to live with certain sacrifices due to the lack of readily available products (after all, the like of Athearn, Atlas, Life-Like, etc., aren't exactly serving the Civil War market, and understandable so, since it's a very tight niche of our hobby).

Please don't jump into a discussion only to point out the negative in something. It accomplishes nothing. Stay positive and share your insight.

Thanks,
Bergie

Why not? If misinformation is posted in the forum, and I'm in a position to correct it, you're saying I shouldn't be concerned about it? The models being discussed are exactly as I described them, fantasies. I reckon that someone looking for Civil War models would benefit from being told this, so that they can make an informed decision whether to buy them, or spend his money on something better.
Each and every single model railroader has to make compromises when taking something from 1:1 scale down to the scale of their choice. No one, and I repeat, no one, has ever made an exact replica of the real world on a model railroad.
Really? According to who, you? Sorry old mate, you're nowhere near well-informed enough to make such an unequivocal statement. Ever seen Pendon? Copenhagen Fields? Retford? St Gerona? Or any one of dozens of UK and European layouts/ displays that do just that? Jeez, my own layout is an "exact replica" of it's prototype - why would you think it can't be done? (Apart from the fact that you're obviously fairly ignorant about model railroading outside your own narrow experience?)
While it's getting easier and easier for those of us who are modeling mainstream railroads to replicate scenes as close as possible, I would assume that someone modeling the Civil War era is going to have to live with certain sacrifices due to the lack of readily available products
And that's why you shouldn't assume. Had you read all the replies, you'd be aware of supplier and resources catering specifically to Civil War-era modellers. Living with sacrifices is one thing, pretending that some second-rate toys represent Civil War railroads is another.
after all, the like of Athearn, Atlas, Life-Like, etc., aren't exactly serving the Civil War market, and understandable so, since it's a very tight niche of our hobby).
So what then, Civil War modellers should settle for junk? Rather than rely on RTR manufacturers, which seems to be MR's default position these days, aspiring Civil War modellers could do their own research, and make their own models, just like the people MR used to cater for.
Please don't jump into a discussion only to point out the negative in something. It accomplishes nothing. Stay positive and share your insight.
What a stupid thing to write. Pointing out the negative in this case hopefully prevented the OP from spending money on junk - you reckon that accomplishes nothing? You need to learn the difference between a legitimate critique and being negative. But based on your past form, I won't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

Anyway, that's your lot. Ban me from the forum, remove me from the member's database, or whatever you do with anyone who gives you a serve. I realise now that the people who reckon MR is being dumbed down were right all along.

Mark.
